With the mission of building Hong Kong into a more caring society, the Social Welfare Department spearheaded a territory-wide 'Volunteer Movement' since 1998 to encourage more people from all sectors to take part in volunteering. A Steering Committee on Promotion of Volunteer Service is thus formed to give directive and formulate overall strategies on the promotion of volunteering. Under the Steering Committee, four sub-committees each with focus on student and youth, corporations, community organizations and promotion and publicity are formed to devise action plans. Within the Department, the Central Office for Volunteer Service is set up as well to serve as the executive arm of the Steering Committee and its Sub-committees in promoting volunteerism. After a series of promotional programmes and with support and resources provided by the Steering Committee, more than 924 000 volunteers coming from over 2 064 organizations of all kinds joined the Movement as of August 2010. In 2009, more than 21.2 million of volunteer service hours were delivered to those in need in our society. The Central Office for Volunteer Service provides you with one-stop service such as joining volunteering, matching with service opportunities, forming and training of staff/organization volunteer team, etc.
