    Rehabilitation Services

Q1: How can I obtain information on the various rehabilitation services?
A1: You can obtain information from the web page on Rehabilitation Service, or approach your school social worker, medical social worker, family caseworker or staff of respective rehabilitation unit to determine which service suit you best.

Q2: How can I apply for rehabilitation services if my family member or I am in need?
A2: If you want to apply for community support services, you can directly approach the service unit for service. If you or your family member wants to receive day training or residential services, you can approach your school social worker, medical social worker, family caseworker or staff of respective rehabilitation unit to make the application vide our Central Referral System for Rehabilitation Services.

Q3: My family member is waiting for a placement in a hostel for the mentally handicapped. If I want to know how long I should wait, where can I get the information?
A3: We used to disseminate information on the latest service provisions and the waiting list statistics at regular intervals to concerned service units of the Department and NGOs, from whom the public can obtain information whenever necessary. For information on individual application, the responsible caseworker can contact us on behalf of the applicant. We would only answer enquiries from the responsible caseworker after verification of relevant particulars.

Q4: My mentally handicapped son will soon graduate from special school. Can he apply for adult residential service?
A4: If you encounter problem in caring for your mentally handicapped family member, or if you consider your present abode not suitable for him/her to live in, you can approach your school social worker, medical social worker, family caseworker or staff of respective rehabilitation unit to make appropriate referral for residential service according to your circumstances and needs, or to arrange for community support service or day training to solve any care or adjustment problem encountered by your family.

Q5: Is Halfway House service a long term residential arrangement to the ex-mentally ill persons?
A5: Halfway House is a rehabilitation service which provides the ex- mentally ill persons with transitional residential care and tailor-made training programmes to enhance service users' social adjustment ability in order that they can finally lead an independent life in the community after around two-year residential training. So, it is not a long term residential arrangement.

Q6: Should the applicant of Halfway House service apply for any sheltered workshop placement first?
A6: No, it depends on the vocational training need of the applicant. Sheltered workshop training is only one of various types of vocational training service to meet the need of applicant. So, the applicant of Halfway House is not required to apply for sheltered workshop at the same time.

Q7: My elderly mother will be discharged from hospital soon. She is so frail that she can no longer take care of herself. What can we do?
A7: Patient or her family members can approach the Medical Social Services Unit of the hospital the patient is attending. Medical Social Workers would assess the needs of the patient and introduce or refer appropriate social support services e.g. home help service, elderly day care centre, for her.
