"60 Years We Care" - The year 2018 marks the 60th anniversary of and a new milestone for the Social Welfare Department.
Established in January 1958, the Social Welfare Department is committed to providing the needy in our society with welfare services to meet their needs. Over the past 60 years, welfare services in Hong Kong have evolved rapidly from emergency relief into a diversity of professional services today, covering the realms of social security, services for the elderly, rehabilitation and medical social services, family and child welfare, services for young people, etc. All these serve to provide support for those in need of care and financial assistance.
Furthermore, we provide the public with a range of preventive, developmental, supportive and counselling services, seeking to allocate resources to meet the basic needs of the most needy and help them move from welfare to self-reliance.
Currently, the expenditure on social welfare accounts for some 19% of the total recurrent Government expenditure. This comes second among all policy areas, showing the great importance attached by the Government to welfare services.
In furtherance of our service objectives, we adopt "60 Years We Care, In Harmony We Share" as the theme of our 60th anniversary this year, hoping that different sectors of our society will interact and collaborate such that the general public, the welfare sector and the business community will continue to forge partnership with the Government in building a caring and harmonious society. Looking ahead, we will continue to uphold the "people-oriented" approach, keep abreast of the latest social developments and strive to deliver services tailored to the needs of the public.
