District Highlights 2024-25

Support for Carers – Carers’ Day

  • To echo the “Care the Carers Campaign”, a three-year territory-wide publicity campaign, launched by SWD in 2023-24, the District Social Welfare Office (DSWO) designated 19 October 2024 as the district’s “Carers’ Day” to promote support for carers of the elderly and persons with disabilities.  To mark the occasion, the DSWO subsidised local welfare service units to organise a variety of activities to acknowledge the contributions of carers and promote support services for them.

Short Film Screening and Sharing Session on Elder Abuse

  • The DSWO organised a screening of the short film Bric-A-Brac on 12 December 2024 at a cinema, and held a sharing session on elder abuse, with a view to raising awareness among elderly service units and community stakeholders regarding the needs of the elderly and the risks of elder abuse.

“Together We Care” School Talk and Sharing Session

  • To promote youth mental well-being, the Central Western, Southern and Islands District Task Group on Community
Mental Health Support Services held the “Together We Care” School Talk and Sharing Session at a local secondary school.  Through the sharing of mental health tips by a clinical psychologist and personal experiences in overcoming life challenges by guest speakers, including an amputee athlete and a singer-songwriter, the talk encouraged students to approach challenges with a positive attitude, and strengthened their resolve to stay away from Etomidate and other drugs.

30th Anniversary of the Senior Citizen Card Scheme

  • To commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Senior Citizen Card Scheme (SCCS), the Senior Citizen Card Office organised several promotional and concessions activities from April 2024 to March 2025 under the theme “30 Years of Reverence and Care, Concessions and Benefits Everywhere”. Key initiatives included introducing the history and development of the SCCS on Healthpedia, a radio programme of the Radio Television Hong Kong, on 30 April 2024; organising a concession week from 20 to 26 September 2024; producing two promotional videos about the SCCS; distributing A5 zipper pouches containing information on carer support services to the elderly; and inviting additional organisations/companies/merchants to offer concessions as gestures of respect to the elderly.

Recruitment of Foster Parents through the “1+1” Recruitment Scheme and Increase in Incentive Payments

  • The Central Foster Care Unit launched the “1+1” recruitment scheme in early 2024, encouraging existing foster parents to refer their relatives and friends to become foster parents.  The scheme enables referred relatives and friends to assist in caring for foster children when the foster parents are on leave.  With the significant increase in incentive payments for foster parents effective from April 2024, coupled with enhanced publicity efforts, the number of registered foster homes rose from 978 to 1 038 between April 2024 and March 2025.
