Annual District Highlights
District Highlights 2023-24
Working Together to Protect Children and Families
- To dovetail with the implementation of the Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse Ordinance and enhance collaboration among service units on child protection efforts for early identification and timely intervention, three district training seminars were organised by the Family and Child Protective Services Unit (Tuen Mun) between October 2023 and January 2024 for social workers and local stakeholders. One of these seminars was tailored specifically for social workers from pre-primary institutions. Meanwhile, a “Happy Family” Carnival organised by the Tuen Mun District Co-ordinating Committee on Family and Child Welfare Services took place on 27 January 2024, promoting positive parenting and combating domestic violence to about 200 participating families.
Boosting Residents’ Mental Health
- With the aim of promoting a healthy youth image, the Tuen Mun Local Committee on Services for Young People (LC) organised the “Sports and Art Show of Youth 2024” on 4 February 2024. The event provided a good opportunity for youth in the Tuen Mun district to demonstrate their talents through a variety show and emerging sports activities. In addition, the LC continued to promote mental health activities and messages through “Health+”, an online youth mental health platform for the Tuen Mun district, with a view to strengthening young people’s resilience and ability to cope with adversity and setbacks in life.
Promoting Mutual Assistance and Social Inclusion in the Community
- The Tuen Mun District Co-ordinating Committee on Rehabilitation Services collaborated with district rehabilitation service units to organise the “Rehabilitation Services Work Experience Programme”, which aimed to enhance students’ understanding of the abilities and potential of persons with disabilities (PWDs), encourage acceptance, and promote messages of mutual assistance and social inclusion. Additionally, the Committee organised “Open Day” events in collaboration with different rehabilitation service units in the district to increase public awareness of rehabilitation services, provide carers and the public with a deeper understanding of social services and community resources, and foster an inclusive and caring environment for PWDs
Strengthening Support for Elderly Persons and Promoting Age-friendliness
- The Tuen Mun District Co-ordinating Committee on Elderly Services continued to develop services for young-old and support for elderly carers. The Committee recruited and trained young-old volunteers, known as “Joyful Aunts” and “Happy Uncles”, encouraging them to participate in community services, such as visiting needy elderly persons and their carers in the community, and to promote the spirit of mutual assistance and positivity.
Supporting Carers of Elderly Persons and Persons with Disabilities
- To continue supporting families and carers of elderly persons and PWDs, the Tuen Mun District Co-ordinating Committee on Rehabilitation Services collaborated with the “Mobile Van for Publicity Service on Mental Wellness” and different rehabilitation service units to hold service promotional booths under the theme “Take a Short Break for Yourself!” Over the past two years, these booths were successfully set up in all public housing estates in the Tuen Mun District, disseminating information on community services and mental health in order to reach hidden families and carers. Additionally, a “Together. We Support” Working Group on Supporting Carers was established under both the Tuen Mun District Co-ordinating Committee on Elderly Services and the Tuen Mun District Co-ordinating Committee on Rehabilitation Services. The Working Group organised a series of district-wide activities to promote community resources to carers, build support networks for carers, and create a carer-friendly environment
